About

Who is Mercy Atieno Onyango?

A result oriented and enthusiastic young Kenyan woman with an educational background in Environmental Science from Maseno University in Kenya. Mercy is a commonwealth scholar currently enrolled in an ongoing part-time distance learning Master of Science in Responsible Tourism Management at Leeds Beckett University. 


After 5 years of active responsible tourism programs and projects management, she took an intentional path into active management of hospitality establishments' operations. On this other side, Mercy seeks to soak in the true purpose of responsible tourism for community development and intentional conservation of tourism destinations and the planet at large. She recently joined the Saruni Basecamp Camps operations as Assistant Camp Manager for Leopard Hill in Masai Mara - Naboisho Conservancy. 

For over 4 years she had been working in the Kenyan tourism industry managing donor-funded projects' activities and community enterprise development programs in a private sector association called Ecotourism Kenya. Mercy's free time has been proactively invested in volunteer engagements with international organizations and programs that promote sustainable and responsible tourism practices.


Her professional capabilities are intense on project and program management, training, community education, planning and coordination of stakeholder engagement forums, and sustainability training & coaching.

As she continues to grow her interest in sustainable development focuses, Mercy has built a network of intentional interactions that lead her to participate in the relevant professional engagements and accomplishments.


Mercy has a great passion for environmental consciousness, biodiversity conservation, responsible tourism, and effective community engagement. Proactive youth leadership for transformation is her motivation.

Positive and constructive aggressiveness is Mercy's greatest inspiration to soar, succeed and make a meaningful impact on all that she does and all the people she interacts with. She calls herself an infectious wave of determination.

Assistant Camp Manager - Leopard Hill

To support the management of all operations and activities at the Camp, in coordination and collaboration with key interfaces across the organization, to efficiently and ultimately, exceed Saruni Basecamp Camps’ promise of guest satisfaction, in line with the sustainability framework of the Long Run’s 4Cs – Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce.

A full time management position which involved provision of leadership for all
the programs within the organization. The main responsibilities revolved around programs management, growth and support of programs activities, and research & advocacy and overseeing the organization’s sustainability certification programs.

Project Officer in charge of the activities of the EU-funded GreenTour Kenya project  - "Replicating tourism industry sustainability best practices into the Kenyan and wider African tourism supply chain through an integrated business-led approach."
